When it's time to start thinking about senior homes, you will find many factors to consider. In fact, too much can seem overwhelming. But it does not have to be that way!
Knowing the fundamental differences and similarities between independent and assisted living facilities will help you make decisions tailored to your loved one's needs. You can decide which level of care is best for your loved ones by assessing their ability to manage daily activities without the help of others. Independent living facilities are only suitable for seniors who can live alone but want additional assistance if needed, but the elderly, who need regular access to personal assistance, should consider assisted living.

Assisted Living for Seniors
Assisted Living Facility's design is about providing those who may need help with daily activities in the long term but do not need the level of skilled care provided in a nursing home. Elderly people ready for life may need help with daily tasks, including washing, dressing, medication reminders, and transportation.
The types of support you usually offer in an assisted living facility are as follows:
  • Get help with scheduled and unscheduled programs such as bathing and toileting.
  • 24-hour emergency call system with the resident's apartment.
  • Medication management support.
  • Health plans and life training.

Independent Living for Older Adults
In comparison, an independent living facility was established for a person who needed little help in his daily life. Older people who choose an independent community seek security, freedom from household chores and care and opportunities to socialize and enrich their lives. They often live active lives and try to enjoy retirement without the responsibilities and maintenance of a home.
The level of personal care in assisted living is often not found in an independent living environment. When special care or healthcare professionals are needed, these services are generally established privately.

Similarities between Independent and Assisted Living
Both assisted and independent living facilities offer senior citizens privacy and independence. Residents can go out when they need to, and family members can often refrain from worrying about difficult visiting hours. Families also benefit from knowing that their loved ones are in a caring environment that provides assistance and security. Also, both assisted and independent communities offer housing and support services.

How to Choose Between Independent and Assisted Living?
If it's a question of independent living or assisted living, remember the interests of your loved one. While independent living can be a better option for older people who want to maintain their independence with the help they need, assisted living can be a better option for those who need extra help with life activities.

It really helped me understand how assisted living facilities could help aging adults by giving them the everyday support they need. My colleague talked about his aging uncle and how he wants to live away from his son. I think he should try bringing up this topic to him so he'd consider it.
